Fire Warden's Trail

December 31, 2010

The final hike of 2010! We have traveled to the Sugarloaf area of Maine to celebrate New Years. After dropping a car at the Sugarloaf ski area, we drove to the trailhead of the Fire Warden's trail, happy to be able to make it most of the way on a snow packed road.

After gearing up, 9 of us headed out under partly cloudy skies with the tempature near 40 degrees. The stream crossing we came too were still snow bridged in areas, allowing for dry crossings as we made our way to the old cabin. Once there we stopped for a quick lunch break and photos. Up until hear the trail was moderate, with a few steeper sections.

After leaving the cabin we started up steep terrain with deep snow. Going was slow as we made our way to treeline. Here we layered up to be prepared for the @ 30 mph winds. From here we changed in and out of snowshoes several times as we encountered areas of deep snow and snowless rocks. The winds were bringing in low clouds that kept the summit hidden until we were @ 100 yards away.

Photos, celebrations, and we started down. Spliting into two groups we encountered no issues as we arrived back to the car just before dark.
