South & Middle Carter

19 Mile Brook, Carter Dome, Carter Moriah, North Carter, Imp trails

March 18, 2010

Today was a return to the Carter Range to finish the trail work between South and Middle Carter and summit Middle Carter which we ran out of time previously. We started right in with removing more blowdowns on the 19 Mile Brook trail and continued along the way to Zeta Pass.

From Zeta Pass to South Carter we found the trail had only been broken out about 1/3 of the way before the previous hiker(s) had turned back. We took over stomping out the trail and removing what ever trees remained in the way. After a quick stop at the summit we pressed on towards Middle Carter where trail finding was the biggeer issue. We found that we had been on the actual trail on our previous attempt that we ran out of daylight. In a few areas the blowdowns were thick even though we found signs that somebody had also performed clearing recently.

Reaching the summit we celebrated Justin's completion of his SSW48, and his all season 48 goal. Jeff suggested we press on North towards the N Carter trail and descend via it and the Imp trail. We were in luck that this section required far less work so enjoyed the descent through deep soft snow down to the junction of the fire road that leads to Camp Dodge. From here a short walk had us at the road and back to our cars.
