Mt Moriah via Stony Brook

Stony Brook - Carter Moriah trails

March 11, 2010

Today was a special day! MarkL from VFTT, was completing his quest of hiking the Winter 115! What an honor it was to join him on the blue bird day. After a long day prior to this, and long drives for some, we met at DD in Gorham before making the short drive over to the parking area.

Gearing up we were quickly on our way in warm temps and bright sunshine. Spring must be around the corner as we all were wishing we had worn shorts today. We made quick time to the ridge and junction with the Carter Moriah trail as we got to know one another. Heading up the ridge we had troubles finding/following the trail. Trail condition reports had indicated only one recent successful summit in several attempts.

For a while we bushwhacked where we thought the trail should be, but in the end gained the ridge and found cairns here and there as we made our way in the general direction of the summit. It took a while, a few scratches, some post holing in spruce traps, but we made the summit and congratulated Mark on his achievement - one that very few people have accomplished.
