This morning we debated hiking Jefferson, but with snow, sleet, and fog predicted for the afternoon, we decided we would head down to Lincoln Woods and climb Mt Flume via the Osseo trail - a trail we have never been on.
We arrived at Lincoln Woods to find an almost empty parking lot at 8 AM - us and 4 other cars. We feared up and made our way to the bridge crossing the river. The 1st half of the bridge was covered with glare ice making it tricky to keep your footing. Once on the other side the footing improved, but the Wilderness trail was in very poor shape for XC skiing. The 1st 1.5 miles to the Osseo trail went fast - 30 minutes and we were turning onto it. The trail initially stays beside a stream as it meanders through the woods. It then starts a gradual slope up unitl some switchbacks where teh trail becomes steeper, soon passing through a set of stairs. After the stairs, the trail once again has a gradual slop until just before the intersection with the Flume Slide trail -here it becomes very steep. As we ascend higher the snow is deeper reaching about 2 feet at the higher elevations. At the intersection we see recent footprints indicating someone had come up the Flume Slide trail which is very diffcult in the Winter and not recommended. From here we travel .1 miles to the rocky summit and enjoy a 360 degree view. After some photo's we return to the trail junction for lunch, before heading down. As we approach the Wilderness trail we finally see the first people of the day - a couple walking, 2 dogs, and 2 women skiing - not much activity for an area that is usually teaming with folks. This is a nice trail - we are looking forward to going back in Summer. Geri wore light weight trail shoes for the 1st 2 miles before switching to her Koflachs -we both carried snowshoes and crampons but did not need them. However without more snow, they will be needed at upper sections soon as there is little cover over the ice.
