Mt Garfield

October 4, 2008

We woke to cloudy skies with a hint of rain/snow in the air, so we decided to hike a nearby favorite - Mt Garfield. We didn't arrive to the trail head until 10:30 and found the parking area over flowing with more cars that we have seen there before. We decided to push a fast pace in the cool damp air, and off we went. We passed so many people heding in both directions that it felt more like we were on Franconia Ridge.

About 1 mile from the summit we ran into the snow line - not a lot, but enough to make small snowballs. The clouds were getting thicker and the breeze stronger. As we reach the junction of the trail headng over to Galehead, we ran into Trish and Alex - Trich a mother to 5 year old Alex who are working on the NH48 together. Today was #15 - way to go guys!

We ran up to the summit - where we found no views, but a crowd of folks that were part of a relay race from the Greenleaf trail to The Zealand parking lot. A few quick hello's and we haed down, first running into Gwynna who was on her way up, and then catch Trish and Alex. We hiked for a bit and then stopped for a break waiting for Gwynna to catch up. From here we all hiked down together. Alex kept Bob amused with lots of stories about her hiking experiences, her younger sister Sage, and of course a few about her mom Trish.

A very nice hike and an honor to hike with young Alex. This 5 year old is well on her way to the NH48, and clearly loves to be out hiking with her mom.

Length of Hike: 5 hours
