Today we helped Lendawg celebrate his 48th of the NH48 peaks. We met at the Rocky Branch trailhead on Rte 16 at 8 AM along with @ 20 others. With temps around 40 we headed up the trail under a bright blue sky. It was hard to believe that this was the middle of Winter.
We met Len last year when he joined Sarah on her 48th. Seems like all it took was that one hike to hook Len on hiking the NH48. We only got to hike with Len on a few of these hikes, but they were all lots of fun, many times due to his fun nature. The first @ 3 miles is a steady uphill to the height of land where the Engine Hill bushwhack begins. We regrouped here before heading into the woods following a previous track in the snow. The middle section of the bushwhack contained many spruce traps that caught many. The snow was 3 - 4 feet deep in this area. When we reached the Isolation trail we looked for signs of recent activity for the second bushwhack but did not see any. We decided to continue on the Isolation trail to the Davis Path. The trails were all well broken out. About 20 minutes before hitting the Davis path we ran into 4 guys that were on there way back to the Rocky Branch shelter. Arriving at the summit we had great views of Mt Washington. The clouds were rolling in but it was still a warm day. We enjoyed treats and conversation while waiting for everyone to arrive. Soon Len appeared -received/gave hugs, and passed around a bottle of chapmagne that someone had brought along. After a group photo the group started to make the long trip back to the cars.
