Today our plan was to go over Jefferson and Adams on our way to see BobC summit Mt Madison to complete he NH48 list. Amid a flurry of emails and postings on Friday, we decided to believe the forecast from weather.com and were rewarded with views of Mt Washington and sunshine when we woke.
We set off from the Caps Ridge parking lot with Dave Metsky a little after 8 AM. About 15 minutes into the hike we caught up with a couple of bird watchers who were able to identify several of the birds that we were hearing. Two guys (Bob & Mike) that we had seen in the parking lot caught us and said hello. They knew who the 3 of us were from VFTT and ROT and were soon hiking with us to the summit of Jefferson.
We set a leisurely pace filled with great conversations on past hikes and Dave kept us entertained with numerous stories. By the time we had reached the summit of Jefferson, Bob and Mike had decided to accept our invitation to join us on our hike to Madison and offer of a ride back to their car.
After leaving the summit we met what would the first of 2 dozen hikers in differant groups that were doing a Presi Traverse. We hope they were all successful!
As we approached Edmunds Col we came across a large snow field that was 8 feet high where the trail crossed. Soon we saw more snowfields including one area known as "the beach" where we saw several back country skiers making turns.
We reached the summit of Adams to find several others there celebrating under the partly cloudy skies. We decided to hold off an lunch until we reached Madison hut and headed off. Nearing the junction of the Airline trail we called BobC to see how far along he and his group were. After hearing that they were just starting up the headwall we headed to the hut where we found Mad River and his wife Susan, Trish & Alex, Diamond Ridge, Moose Maiden, and Gwena. They reported that HikerBob, JayTrek and Windy were already on the summit waiting on BobC.
Over lunch we were entertained by the hut crew working on the Fire Alarm. The smoke detectors are all wired together so when one goes off, they all do. It was a loud lunch :>
With dark skies approaching we decided that we would summit and catch BobC on our way down. So off we went, making the summit just as a few drops started to come down. With a stiff breeze and the damp air we decided to head down. Near the bottom we ran into BobC and his group of 8 - 10. Quick congrats and we continued down to the hut. As we reached we witnessed several women doing yoga over on the grass. When they finished they came over and we chatted. We were introduced to the members of the "Painted Toe Solemates" When you see the photos it will make sense :>
We were soon off descending via the Valley Way trail where we knew HikerBob would be waiting to give us a ride back to our cars. Once there we we headed back to TarryHo campground where we were hosting a Post Hike Party for BobC. Congrats to BobC on his acheivement. We had a great day in the mountains, got to see old friends, and made two new ones.
Length of Hike: 10:00 hours
