Our first hike of 2007! We were so looking forward to getting back out on the trails. Due to a sick kitty and work trips, this was our first hike since Thanksgiving.
We met Amy at the trail head a little before 8 under under snow fluries. It had snowed a inch or two over night down at the trailhead, and maybe 4 inches up at elevation. You cross a bridge a few feet from the start of the trail and another 15 minutes later as the trail meanders through the woods with little up and downs. At the crossing a little under a mile into the hike we found the brook well frozen making the crossing easy. From here the trail joins an old logging road and for the next 1.5 miles or so we enjoyed a pleasant grade as we made our way to the ridge. The trail had been broken out, possibly by hikers the previous day, but with the overnight snow and wind, all signs of previous human travel was gone. At one point moose tracks joined the trail and we followed those and the trail as it became steeper. A little below the ridge where we would join the Carter Moriah trail we paused for a snack, before moving on. Here we had our last wind blown snow, and started to see the sun trying to burn through the clounds. Reaching the junction we turned left and soon came the the first of several ledges with great views to the East and South. The close we got to the summit, the more blue sky we saw. Once last snack before the summit, we dropped our packs and scrambled up the last .1 miles to wonderful views. After some hugs and photos we headed back down and then began the trip back to the trailhead. As we reached the first set of ledges the clouds over the Presi's cleard providing stunning views. The skies cleared and we continued our hike under bright blue skies. At one point Geri, who was in the lead, noticed that in addition to our fresh tracks from our ascent, there were fresh prints on a moose - he had followed our tracks for about 1/4 miles - he had to have been there less than an hour after we passed through - too bad we didn't see him. Later on further down trail we came across several fresh sets of what we beleive were fox tracks. Pretty nice knowing we were the only 3 humans out on the mountain yesterday. Thanks again Amy for the great hike - we look forward to being there (THIS YEAR) when you finsh your quest for the Winter 48! |
