In honor of Thanksgiving we hiked Mt Tom.

We started at the Highland Center and were joined by Christine. The winds were howling as we got ready at our cars with snow starting to fall. The River crossings were not frozen yet, but the rivers were low enough to allow us to make our way across safely. There appeared to be a single set of tracks ahead of us and we met the own just before the cutoff forthe Avalon trail. From here to the summit we were breaking trail though snow 6 inches to almost 3 feet deep. We stopped for a quick snack at the turnoff for the Mt Tom Spur trail and listened to a large tree straining in the wind- we were sure it was about to snap, but didn't. On the summit we found the summit carin, but quickly moved off due to blowing snow in the @ 30 mph winds. As we started our descent the snow and wind subsided with rays of sunshine lighting the mountains across the notch. We completed the day by enjoying a Thanksgiving feast at the Highland Center.

Directions to the trailhead: Rte 93 north to Exit 35. Follow Route 3 East to the intersection with Route 302 in Twin Mountain. Take a right onto Route 302 and follow it South for @ 10 miles. The Highland Center and Crawford Station will be in your right.
