Owls Head

Cold day with a nasty wind. 5 of us met at the Lincoln Woods parking area and got moving at 8:15. 3 others had started ahead of us so when we reach the Black Pond bushwhack there were a set of tracks that we followed for about 1/2 the way. We realized that the group in front of us were trending too low, so we departed and broke out the trail the rest of the way coming out just after the last river crossing.
The three stream crossings were difficult and challenging. We had to search upstream at each anywhere from 20 - 50 yards to find the safest place to cross. The 3 that had started ahead of us followed us across the first 2 crossings, but choose to turn back on the 3rd.
There was no sign of track on the Brutus Bushwhack, so off we went breaking trail, first to the old skidder road, and then making switchbacks as we made our way up the slope. The going was difficult in the 2 - 3 foot deep snow, but we eventual gained the ridge and found the old summit. From here we made our way through deep drifts to the new summit before heading down at a much quicker pace than the ascent.
We made it across the stream crossings and to the Black Pond bushwhack before we needed head lamps. With a full moon it was easy to follow our previous track and we were soon back to the pond and shortly after the Wilderness trail. A quick 2.6 miles as we returned to our cars, packed up and headed to the Common Man for dinner.
