Presi Stroll

September 20, 2008

With the weather promising to be perfect, we figured we should make the most of the day and spend as much time as possible above treeline. A bit of discussions and we were on to meet HikerBob and Kaboose for a jaunt up Jewell to Washington, over to Monroe, and on to Edmunds Path. After waking to a BRRRRISK 31.5 degree morning in Twin, we car spotted and were on the Jewell trail by 8:30am.

The lighting was lovely with the early sun coming through the trees and we warmed up fairly quickly. Breaking out of the trees we stopped at lunch rocks for a quick snack and to admire the views. Kaboose had her eyes on George and Monroe as these were her first visits and she was anxious to knock off another two of her 48.

We enjoyed the Gulf trail approach to Washington. Able to catch quite a few views of the Cog – diesel versus coal a good controversy even among good hiking buds. We captured quite a few shots of the various trains, inhaled a bit of smoke (and I swear I later shampooed soot out of my hair). The views of surrounding peaks, and further ridgelines were spectacular – made even better by the perfect fall weather and blue skies.

Approx 1:30 we arrived at Washington. Got Kaboose up onto the peak for the obligatory photos and to claim another of her 48. We enjoyed our Washington summit lunch and drinks (Thanks HB!!), and quick trip around the upper platform, and back to the trails. While Lakes hut was now closed, we stopped briefly for a few more snacks and pressed up towards Marilyn (Kaboose’s name for the peak – kind of nice to have a female figurehead mixed in the presi’ group)

We successfully summitted Monroe, celebrated with a few spicettes, then Bob and I took off at a fairly good clip to try to grab Eisenhower and descend before dark. (yup, forgot the headlamps) We made good time to Ike, enjoyed 2 minutes of scenery and headed back down. HikerBob and Kaboose would skip Ike, but meet us at the Edmunds Path Parking lot.

Successful day: 2 new peaks for Kaboose, GREAT weather. Bob and I made it down before dark. HB and Kaboose shortly thereafter but with headlamps. Dinner and drinks at the trailer. 4 very tired but happy bodies. Thanks for a fantastic day!!
