Mt Moosilauke
Trish & Alex's 48th
August 30, 2009

Where to begin?? A special hike to celebrate 2 special people reaching their NH48th. Not sure how many Mother/Daughter combo's are out there that can claim the same feat. Toss in Alex's young age and it's even more unique. The crowds that showed up were an indication of how much Trish and Alex's stories touched so many. And the family celebration was even better with Hugh and 4yr old Sage joining the hike.
Several groups were heading up alternate trails, with the plan on everyone reaching the summit somewhere around 1pm. We joined a large group that included Trish and Alex, Sage, Mad River & Susan, BikeHikeFish and family, Tim & Valerie, HappyHiker, Mad Townie and daughter, LawnSale, Salty... lord I hope I haven't forgotten anyone! Dave Metsky and friends also caught up to us part way.
We took our time, trying to keep somewhat together. Alex was pretty excited, carrying her special walking stick, and enjoying the company Amanda and Mathew. And while Sage did an outstanding job, her young legs tired part way. Trish had it figured out. She removed Sage's boots, and promptly tucked her into her large backpack. All we could see was Sage's head sticking out of the back of the pack! Too funny, but Sage enjoyed herself. And evidently was comfortable enough to fall asleep later when Tim swapped packs to help with the load.
We made better time than originally planned, and soon were approaching the top. Others had already gathered there waiting for the large group and guests of honor to arrive. We formed a small tunel, holding our poles overhead for Alex and Trish to come through. Alex bounded up the last few steps towards the peak, I'm not even sure her feet were touching the ground.
Photos, snacks, smiles, more hikers. Guessing the entire group may have numbered 40-50 with all the folks on top. Pretty incredible! Bob and MadRiver had a NH48 patch for Trish and Alex, and we also had a Tshirt for Alex. The weather cooperated pretty well for Moosilauke and we spent a fair amount of time on the summit. Sadly, all good things have to come to an end... or at least to a half way point. It was time to head down. The large group split into several smaller ones, and ventured down various trails.
We said a few goodbys once we got back to the parking lot. But many of us were headed over to MadRiver and Susan's for a post hike bbq. Great food, more people and a lovely way to extend a fun day. Gwynna and DiamondRidge had made an amazing poster showing shots of every one of Trish & Alex's 48 peaks (including the Moose!), as well as a signing poster. Just can't feel that a trip report will ever capture this entire day, but it will certainly be remembered by everyone who participated. The only bad part of the day was seeing it come to an end. Congrats again to Trish and Alex!
