We’re heading up north with a rather distinguished list of participants for the weekend’s activities: Elisabeth (from Austria) is interning at my company and Bob & I are lucky enough to have her staying with us this. Our frequent partner-in-crime, KEA (Christine) from New Zealand will be joining us with the famed Dave Metskey. Christine is also bringing two of her work friends: Steffanie (from France) and Zach of South Africa. Quite the collection…
Saturday’s hike will be up Edmonds path, over Eisenhower and Pierce, over to Mitzpah hut and then down to the Highland Center. It’s rather cloudy as we start up at the crack of 10am, but we’re optimistic we’ll get some views later on. Eisenhower is quite fogged in, and we also have some high winds. Dave performs his ‘hand stand’ by Bob’s request, and we enjoy a few minutes of antics on the summit. Starting over to Pierce the sky starts to break and we’re treated to the spectacular views along the southern Presi’s. The only rain of the day, a short burst, manages to hit while we’re safely inside the hut. And the remainder of the trip to the Highland center is quite pleasant as we finish our journey shortly after 5pm. Dinner for 7 hosted at ‘chez Hayes’ trailer proves to be a wonderful event. As usual, Christine has brought enough to feed an army. We enjoy a great meal highlited by apple/rhubarb pie that Christine has whipped up in the trailer (in our microwave/convection oven generally reserved for heating water or popcorn!) Zach entertains us with his guitar and singing – lots of stories and laughs, a wonderful evening as we also celebrate Elisabeth’s 21st bday. Sunday’s hike gets us to Falling Waters trail for a more respectable start around 9:15. We’ll head up to the ridge to cross Lincoln and Lafayette. It’s a crystal-blue day and we stop frequently to enjoy the views and take photos of the falls and stream on our way to the ridge. Clear, blue skies and a cool light breeze – it is one of the most perfect days up in the Whites. We’re so pleased to be able to share this beautiful trail with our visitors on such a great day. It sadly is probably also the last hike we’ll do with Christine in NH as she is 2 weeks from leaving for Alaska for a new job. We enjoy every view and take extra time on the peaks, wanting to hold onto this day as long as possible. Back to the parking lot shortly after 5pm and it’s time to head home. Christine and gang have a long drive back to the Cape. Bob, Elisabeth and I will close up the trailer in Twin Mtn before heading home. This will go down as one of our very most special weekends-- in honor of the lovely Ms Christine (who we’re going to miss dearly), Dave and our special new friends. |
